Would be good if the VISL executive could post U21 eligibility for provincials here as soon as they find out how many spots are being made available to island teams. An official post on this board would avoid the confusion of last season.

We have not been told as of yet. All Leagues in BC will need to submit their registration numbers by mid September. Spots will then be allocated by BC Soccer when the certain group gets together to decide. Hopefully we get to know by Mid October ? The criteria for qualifying will not change and that is in the rules & regs.

The rules last year were not followed as far as they were explained to me. An official post on this board would help to clarify.

I am assuming you were at the Organizational meeting, and that was acknowledged that there may have been an email that was misguiding. Regardless, the rules are still the same as they were in print last year. The spots were explained the night of, and accurately as they had been in previous meetings. Read the rules on the website. If you are told the same thing that you were last year via that email - you will see that it actually went against the rules on the website. Know the rules is what I suggest. Yes, I fined myself for giving bad info.......is rare, but I muffed it up and spoke (emailed) incorrectly.

Apology accepted. Still think that posting the rules here, in public, would alleviate any future individual misinterpretation.

Get into provincial cup 101: win the division.

Just for completeness you need the bottom part of section 25 of the VISL rules and regulations.
Seeding procedures will be reviewed at the start of each season to take in to account Provincial allocations and changes/alterations/anomalies in VISL Divisional structure. Teams will be informed of allocations and structure prior to the commencement of the season.

Well if you want to go that way Otter, you better add more info than just that.........especially as the start of season has come and we still do not know how many spots we have. I suppose that is why there is a rule in there somewhere stating that in absence of a rule, we will make a decision......or something close to that. (The ultimate catch all rule that captures situations where there is no rule written or something is out of our direct control.) It should be in very very very small print like some contracts we blindly sign like terms and condition for your phone .......but I think it is in regular print.

I think last season's 'misunderstanding' came down to the fact that the handbook lacks qualification of what happens when 1st spot (div winner) and 2nd spot (VISL cup winner) are the same team.

OPP - Oops, I missed that part . Seems like a catch-all in case of unforeseen circumstances but thanks . Aviva - I mean, I'm not fully aware of the situation that happened last year but it sure sounds like it was a case of people were given "alternative facts". To me, it doesn't seem necessary to clarify as you'd continue working down the priority(division runner up takes priority over the cup runner up) but as I said, I'm not fully aware of what was said so maybe I should just keep my mouth shut....

Last season's U21 Div results from 1st to last:
Mariners Gorge Prospect Lake JdF Bays Fusion
Cup Final Winner: Mariners Cup Final Runner-Up: JdF
Mariners, Gorge, and Prospect Lake went to provincials, but according to the handbook I would have thought the third slot would have gone to JdF. Maybe I misread something. I think we could all use clarification on what we're actually playing for...

Correct, the top 3 teams were the teams that qualified.........as per the handbook. I believe it is clarified.
We had 3 spots last year, not the traditional 4. If you want to go to BC's for U21,(of which this will hopefully be the last year where there is a Provincial Tournament) do the best you can. We will lobby for extra spots if appropriate, but I don't think everybody should qualify for the BC's personally. We can give out extra ribbons here locally.........

I'm not sure that's much of a clarification. According to the handbook last year's 3 provincial slots should have gone to:
1) Mariners (Div winner) 2) Mariners (Cup winner) 3) Gorge (Div runner-up)
Obviously one team cannot be entered twice into the competition, so obviously another choice had to be made. The decision was made to give it to Prospect Lake, but I can see no explanation in the handbook as to why. Probably because it's not there.

Looking for team did give away a bit of past practice. Going further down the Division has been our path the last handful of years when we get extra spots, or in this case losing a spot like we did in B Cup a few years ago. Having said that, for a newer person in the League, I would concede that the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th spot could use cleaning up as to avoid any extra confusion. Again, tough to write down all the circumstances as possible - equations have so many different variables to them. There still is something in the rules that has not been quoted, and besides past practice and case precedent, it is covered under that section of the rule. Good night, happy reading tomorrow.
